"etymology_text": "Unclear and disputed.\nPossibly related to Late Sanskrit वरण्ड (varaṇḍa, “mass, heap of grass”), वरण्डक (varaṇḍaka, “wall”) and Prakrit 𑀯𑀭𑀁𑀟 (varaṃḍa, “wall”); from these, per Turner, arose Bengali বারান্দা (baranda), Hindustani बरंडा (baraṇḍā) / بَرَنْڈا (baranḍā, “veranda”) , Marathi वरंड (varaṇḍa, “parapet”), Odia ଅରଣ୍ଡା (araṇḍā), Persian برآمده (barâmade).\nAccording to Gonçalves Viana, the Indo-Aryan and Portuguese terms developed separately. He connects it to varão, Latin vāra (“forked pole, tripod, trestle”) as in vara do castelo (“high part of a castle”). Similar words can also be found in Catalan barana (“railing”), Occitan and Spanish baranda. The earliest attestation of varanda is 1498.\nSoares argues Indo-Aryan went under a semantic shift due to Portuguese influence in the 16th century, giving rise to the architectural meaning “gallery” in Hindi, Marathi, and other Indian languages.",
